Barking Learning Centre Embraces Solar Energy

The Barking Learning Centre in Barking, United Kingdom, is making a bold move toward sustainability with a new solar energy system, as detailed in a SolarEdge Designer Report dated 8 Jan 2024. Managed by Ameresco, this project showcases how educational and community spaces can reduce their environmental impact while powering their facilities with clean energy.

The Solar System Breakdown

The installation features 64 JA Solar JAM72S30-540/MR panels, each with a peak power of 540W, resulting in a total system capacity of 34.6 kilowatt-peak (kWp). These panels are split into two groups of 32, positioned at an azimuth of 222° and a 10° tilt to maximize sunlight absorption. This setup is designed to generate enough electricity to support the centre’s operations, from lighting classrooms to powering digital resources.

The system includes one SolarEdge SE30K inverter with a capacity of 30.22 kW, paired with 32 PV modules per string, ensuring efficient energy conversion. The bill of materials also lists 32 PJ100 components, likely power optimizers, which help each panel perform at its best, even if some are shaded.

Efficiency and Performance

The report highlights the system’s efficiency, with minimal energy losses. Key simulation parameters include:

Solling/Snow Loss: 1.5%, meaning very little energy is lost due to dirt or snow on the panels.

LID Loss Factor: 1.5%, accounting for minor degradation in panel performance over time.

System Unavailability: 0%, indicating the system is designed for maximum uptime.

Thermal Loss Factors: Adjusted for both flush and tilted mounting to optimize performance in varying conditions.

These factors ensure the Barking Learning Centre’s solar system operates reliably, capturing as much solar energy as possible.

Why It’s a Big Deal

By adopting this solar setup, the Barking Learning Centre is cutting down on energy costs and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. Located at Albertonum Place 1, Barking, this project sets a strong example for other community buildings in the area. The use of advanced SolarEdge technology and precise design planning ensures the system is both eco-friendly and cost-effective.

Looking Ahead

The Barking Learning Centre’s solar installation is a step toward a greener future, supporting both education and environmental goals. With this system in place, the centre is well-equipped to inspire students and visitors while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable Barking.
